We are visitors in our patients’ lives. They are not visitors in ours

by Maj. Lawanda D. Warthen
Commander, USAHC Kaiserslautern

The Patient Advisory Council-Kleber (PAC-K) represents the interests of U.S. Army Health Clinic-Kleber (USAHC-K), which is composed of active duty Soldiers, family members, spouses, retirees, civilians and clinic liaisons.

The clinic commander, chief nurse, and detachment sergeant attend the meetings regularly but are not members of the committee. Patient and family centered care is a new approach to the planning, delivery, and evaluation of healthcare that is grounded in mutually beneficial partnerships between patients, families and healthcare providers. PAC-K members have joined a growing number of volunteers and staff who are committed to creating optimal services and programs within the Kaiserslautern Military Community and Europe Regional Medical Command.

Since its development, the committee has worked to ensure that patients and families enrolled in the clinic have a clear understanding of the services and policies of the USAHC-K while promoting a positive relationship between the patient and the community.  One example of how PAC-K is serving the community is the recent clinic for sports physicals. This was to ensure that school age children were healthy enough for sports activities such as soccer and flag football.

It was the PAC-K committee that determined the need to partner with organizations in the community such as Army Community Services, Red Cross, USO, and the Dental and the Health Clinics. PAC-K is a valued partner in our healthcare system and will play an important role in decisions that affect direct patient care. The committee can influence healthcare decision-making that will affect thousands of patients and families through sharing ideas, advice and expertise.

Your opinion is very important to PAC-K, and the committee wants to hear from you as we continue to implement and evaluate policy and program changes. Your recommendations may include patient concerns, clinic logistics and suggestions for new programs at the Kleber Clinic that could enhance the quality of care.
