Deidesheim, along the German Wine Street, is known to have one of the most romantic Christmas markets. It’s called “Deidesheimer Advent,” and it is only open on Advent weekends.

A German Sunday newspaper rated it as one of the five nicest Christmas markets in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. Its historical and medieval background and a sea of lights adds to the special atmosphere. For more than 32 years more than 100 vendors, artists and crafters from all over Germany have presented their merchandise.

Artisans such as glass blowers, gold smiths, leather tailors, woodcarvers, bakers and potters demonstrate their skills. For the first time, there is an artisan who presents coin sawing. He cuts little art pieces out of coins. A medieval figurine maker revives the former craft. Visitors also can watch the arts of calligraphy, the production of writing ink and the gilding of items.

Visitors who get hungry can make a stop at the Christmas barn of the Deidesheim Palace. Here, they also can stroll through the artists’ studios.
The glühwein offered is made solely from local red wines to assure its quality.
Children  can listen to fairy tales, watch puppet theater, bake in the children’s bakery and craft Christmas gifts.

Concerts take place in churches, on the market and in the community hall called “Paradiesgarten.”

Visitors interested in the local arts and culture scene, should walk on the artists’ route in the historical center. It connects 10 studios, galleries and museums.

The market master in his traditional costume keeps everything in law and order. Market hours are 5 to 9 p.m. today, Dec. 15 and 22; 2 to 9 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 16 and 23; and 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday and Dec. 17.
