Christmas market highlights children
Otterberg offers a children’s Christmas market starting at 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Kindergarten and schoolchildren provide the entertaining program with singing, dancing, performing and crafting. A fairy tale land is set up in the historical classroom in the Cafe Alte Apotheke where students and teachers present the magic world of fairies and jugglers. Crafting stars and Christmas decorations is offered in the Kreissparkasse bank. Saturday, Santa Claus and his reindeer make their appearance at 5 p.m., the U.S. Air Forces in Europe Band’s Five Star Brass Ensemble performs at 7 p.m. on the stage next to the Abbey Church and throughout the afternoon free wagon rides through the historical part of town are available. Chaplain (Maj.) Jonathan Zagdanski, 7th Mission Support Command, lights a Menorah to officially begin the celebration of Hanukkah Dec. 6 on Ramstein. The Festival of Lights historically goes back to 168 B.C. to the time of Judas Maccabeaus, who ordered an 80-day celebration following the rededication to the Temple in Jerusalem. Hanukkah runs through Sunday.

Leather-clad members of the Warrant Officers Association, Rheinland-Pfalz Silver Chapter, families and volunteers drive toward Landstuhl Dec. 5 during a "Toy Run for Kids." Around two dozen of Santa's "bad-boy" helpers, many of them active-duty warrant officers serving with the 21st Theater Sustainment Command, traded reindeer and sleighs for motorcycles, delivering a full truck-sized load of Christmas cargo as well as several hundred euro in cash donations for area children. Participants in the toy convoy rode from their rally point at the Kaiserslautern Military Community Center to the Kinderheim Saint Nikolaus Orphanage in Landstuhl.

But “re-up” NCOs across the 21st Theater Sustainment Command strove to be the best during a Retention NCO and Career Counselor of the Year competition conducted in November and early December.
