They take care of base infrastructure, including the lights, plumbing and buildings.

They manage runways and all paved roads. And they head up the major U.S. Air Forces in Europe landscaping projects as part of Combat Proud.

They are civil engineers and they were recently honored for their good work in the 2005 USAFE Civil Engineer Unit, Flight and Individual Awards.

Engineers from the 435th Air Base Wing brought home 17 of the 33 awards given. And for the second year running, the 435th Civil Engineer Group won the “Outstanding Civil Engineer Unit” (large base category).

The unit win is significant because the group was competing against 14 Civil Engineer Units in USAFE and was identified as the best in the command, said Chief Master Sgt. Rueben Gomez.

“Winning one of these awards is an achievement but winning 17 MAJCOM and having eight runner-ups is simply astounding,” Chief Gomez said.

Chief Gomez said the engineers had hunkered down for the Unit Compliance Inspection in 2005. They became engaged from top to bottom, he said, and earned outstanding and excellent results.

The CE awards reflect a year’s worth of good work managing multi-million projects, said Col. Dave Howe, USAFE Civil Engineer.

Awards were given to outstanding individuals and to outstanding organizations, he said. USAFE winners will go on to compete against civil engineers Air Force wide, Colonel Howe said.
