Greetings to members of the greater KMC area on behalf of the 3,000 members of the 521st Air Mobility Operations Wing!
The 521st AMOW has served as a proud member of Team Ramstein for more than two years, and though many people know we operate the Department of Defense’s largest passenger terminal here, the scope of our mission extends across Europe and beyond.
The AMOW is organized in two groups, 12 squadrons, and 16 detachments located throughout Europe and Southwest Asia. Although it operates in the U.S. Air Forces Europe and Air Force Central Command areas, we are aligned under Air Mobility Command.
We proudly provide mobility aircraft maintenance, aerial port, and command & control to expedite AMC missions operating in 16 countries. It gives us great satisfaction to provide Global Reach in a matter of hours to deliver a striking blow, transport humanitarian assistance, or accomplish aeromedical evacuation missions. Of course, we couldn’t achieve our mission without an exquisite partnership with host nations and host bases at all our locations, as evidenced by the 86th Airlift Wing right here at Ramstein.
As a finale to our annual wing conference last week, which brought together leadership, spouses, and wing award nominees; we held our annual awards banquet Thursday at Kapaun Air Station, where we announced our wing’s annual award winners:

Congratulations go out to all these individuals and their families, as they are true testaments to the Air Force Core Values of Integrity First, Service Before Self, and Excellence In All We Do — who personify the best of what our wing offers. They are members that significantly contributed to the wing, handling 34 percent of AMC’s 119,755 departures, 56 percent of AMC’s 1,325,360,000 pounds of cargo, and 49 percent of AMC’s 2,683,712 passengers worldwide in 2010.
To put the 521st AMOWs contributions in context, we handled the same amount of departures as the Louis Armstrong International Airport in New Orleans, La., hauled the equivalent amount of cargo as shipped out of the Chicago, Dallas-Fort Worth, Atlanta, and Denver Airports — combined, and transported the same amount of passengers as the population of San Diego, Calif. The equivalent of AMC’s entire C-17 fleet transits through Ramstein every ten days.
All our members look forward to capitalizing on the 2010 accolades and lessons learned in order to work smarter, more efficiently, and continuously improve as we move the mission, safely, while taking care of our people. By doing so, we embrace our wing’s motto, “Not Why We Can’t … How We Can!”
