German contractors are scheduled to begin construction at Ramstein’s East Gate Monday, which will detour outbound traffic through the east Harmon Gate. New vehicle barriers are scheduled to be installed at both the east and west gates, allowing only inbound traffic from the gate under construction.

“The construction is being accomplished to enhance force protection for the installation,” said Scott Vincent, the 435th Civil Engineer Squadron program flight chief. “It will aid the 435th Security Forces Squadron in preventing unauthorized access to Ramstein Air Base.”

The project ties in with other ongoing and recently accomplished projects to increase the force protection posture and capabilities on the base, Mr. Vincent added.

Construction will begin with outbound lanes then switch to the inbound lanes of the same gate. The same process will be executed during the Ramstein West Gate construction. With a total of four different sets of lanes receiving new barriers, each group is projected up to one week and will then move on to the next set of lanes.

Beginning with the east gate, two lanes of inbound traffic only will be open through the entire east gate project. During that time, outbound traffic will be directed out of the east Harmon Gate with one lane turning left and another turning right. Due to confusion and congestion leaving Ramstein, it is suggested to use the west gate for outbound travel as much as possible.

During the construction of the west gate, all outbound traffic will be directed through the west Elvis Gate, allowing inbound traffic only. Lanes will remain closed during the weekend to allow the concrete to dry.

Along with the east and west gate construction, there will be a new entry control point at the Arnold Circle on the West Perimeter Road for the 435th Vehicle Readiness Squadron to access Ramp 5, said Mr. Vincent. The projects are a part of the flightline button-up plan which will make the flightline more secure, he added.
There is also additional fencing on other parts of the installation to decrease accessability.

A full week of construction is scheduled to complete the outbound lanes. The same pattern will be followed for the other lanes.

The construction dates are as follows:

• East gate outbound construction will begin Monday
• East gate inbound construction will begin Sept. 1
• West gate outbound construction will begin Sept. 8
• West gate inbound construction will begin Sept. 15
