Core fitness programs remain despite cuts

Like most organizations, the 435th Services Squadron is being impacted by budget reductions affecting programs.
According to Lt. Col. Benjamin Ward, 435th Services Squadron commander,
a restructuring of operational standards will take place starting this
weekend across Services.

The changes are necessary to maintain the high standard of programming customers have come to expect.
“Despite these reductions, we will continue to provide quality programs for the KMC,” he said.

As of today, the fitness centers will discontinue towel service.
Services will conduct a survey to capture interest in having towels
available for purchase in resale areas at the fitness centers.
Equipment cleaning cloths will still be available.

The number of instructional classes, such as aerobics and spinning,
will also be reduced to 20 classes per week. However, this is still
higher than the 15 classes required by AFI. The new instructional
schedule was developed to meet active-duty fit-to-fight initiatives.
Additionally, Services is working with a contractor to offer some of
the discontinued classes on a fee for service basis.
Finally, the number of intramural programs offered will also be reduced
to 10. Fitness centers are required to offer at least four of the five
core intramural sports programs (basketball, volleyball, softball, flag
football and soccer). Services will offer all five of the core
programs.

The reduction will occur in the number of enhanced/extramural programs.
Although there is no requirement to offer enhanced programs, the
fitness center offers five enhanced programs in addition to the core
programs. This far exceeds the Air Force standard.

“In order to support the missions of Ramstein and maximize customer
programming, Services had to make some tough decisions on how to best
support the mission with the budget reductions they faced,” said Col.
Kurt Lohide, 435th Air Base Wing commander.

Services will continue to develop plans to keep programs above standards with an increased focus on customer service.
