The Kaiserslautern Cultural Office sponsors the annual “Culture Market before Christmas” Nov. 25 to Dec. 10 in the newly renovated Fruchthalle in Kaiserslautern.

Local charity organizations such as Terre des Hommes, Live Aid for Disabled, UNICEF, Westpfalz Workshops, Inner Wheel Club and many others display and sell art and craft items which their members created throughout the year. Local and regional schools take part as well and present what their students created. Also, students from the school for arts and crafts in Kaiserslautern show off their latest creations with textiles, glass, pottery, silhouettes and floristics.

Net profits will be donated to various charities.

Children are taken care of in the kids’ game room, where they can play, do handicrafts and sing from 2 to 4 p.m. There will be workshops and readings.

Visitors can take a break in two cafés, where homemade cakes will be offered.

Daily musical entertainment and dance performances will be presented here as well.

Deputy Mayor Dr. Arne Oeckinghaus officially opens the Culture Market before Christmas at 1 p.m. Saturday.

The market is open from 1 to 7 p.m. daily, except for Thursday and Dec. 7 when it’s open until 8 p.m. to give visitors who come for the symphony concerts a chance to check out the items offered for sale.

The Fruchthalle, meaning fruit hall, is a huge building which was built from 1843 to 1846. In former times, the fruit and vegetable market was held there. Today, many events such as concerts, dance balls and official ceremonies are held in the red sandstone building across from the Pfalztheater and next to the soldiers’ war memorial  and tourist office on Fruchthallstrasse.
