Ramstein Southside Annex
Editor’s Note: This is part of the KA’s series of KMC fitness center profiles. Be sure to check the sports section regularly for the skinny on how to use local fitness centers to shape up.
When the new Ramstein Southside Fitness Center opened earlier this year, the former workout facility next to it was redubbed the Southside Annex. In many ways, the Annex has an old-school feel to it – basement cardio rooms, a gym with a heavy bag in the corner, lots of free weights. “A lot of folks just like to work out in peace,” said Jim Grubb, sports director.
A peaceful environment can definitely be found at the Southside Annex. Other than peak workout times (6 to 8 a.m. and 2:30 to 5 p.m.), the place stays relatively calm.
The gym floor, however, is an exception to the tranquility. “One of our best features is the gym space,” said Mr. Grubb. “People can reserve it one time per week for an hour and a half. It’s not first-come, first-serve like some of the other facilities.”
Ramstein’s Southside Annex has two dozen cardio machines in a basement workout room, and another two dozen or so scattered throughout the facility. Two large free-weight rooms sit next to the parent/child workout area (which, according to Mr. Grubb, is the only one of its kind in the KMC), and there is a sizable stretching and ab workout area.
The Annex gym floor plays host to intramurals, varsity sports, team practices and other events. Local high schools will often make use of the space, as well. The Annex also shares space with the Ramstein Health and Wellness Center, which offers a wide variety of dietary and fitness advice.
One must-know fact:
The Annex has the very popular parent/child area, where adults can work out while kids play nearby. The area is due to move to the Northside Fitness Center in the coming months, so get there while you can.
6 a.m. to 8 p.m., Monday to Friday; closed goal days, family days and holidays
The bottom line:
If you want a distraction-free workout, check out the Ramstein Southside Annex.
