Deidesheimer Advent

Deidesheim is known to have one of the most romantic Christmas markets. It’s called “Deidesheimer Advent,” and it is only open on Advent weekends.

A German Sunday newspaper rated it as one of the five nicest Christmas markets in Germany, Austria and Switzerland, also due to its historical and medieval scenery and the sea of lights it is surrounded by.

For 34 years, more than 100 vendors, artists and crafters from all over Germany have presented their merchandise in the well-known wine village along the German Wine Street.

Artisans such as glass blowers, gold smiths, leather tailors, woodcarvers, bakers and potters demonstrate their skills. For the first time, two smiths will show how they work. In the artists’ workshop in front of the town hall, visitors can admire craftsmen demonstrating the founding of tin.

Also being presented will be the making of quilts and patchwork items.
A Christmas barn will be set up in an old barn belonging to the Dienheimer Schloss (palace), where hungry visitors can enjoy warm meals and drinks. They can also stroll through the artists’ studios in the palace.

Throughout the Christmas market, a big variety of food specialties will be being served. The Glühwein offered is made solely from local red wines to assure its quality.

The children’s program includes listening to fairy tales, watching puppet theater,
baking in the children’s bakery and making Christmas crafts.
Visitors interested in exploring Deidesheim away from the market should take a walk on the artists’ route in the historical town center. The route connects 10 studios, galleries and museums, and provides insight into the local arts and culture scene.

The market master in his traditional costume will keep everything in order.
Market hours are 5 to 9 p.m. today, Dec. 5, 12 and 19; 2 to 9 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 6, 13 and 20; and 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 7, 14 and 21.

Deidesheim is located between Bad Dürkheim and Neustadt. Officials recommend using public transportation to get to Deidesheim. The train station is right across from the Christmas market.
