KMC Fire Emergency Services will kick off Fire Prevention Week with a parade through Ramstein Military Family Housing at 10:15 a.m. Oct. 7. Immediately following the parade they will continue with a variety of festivities at the Fire Department Open House from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Fire Station 1, Bldg. 2303, on the Ramstein flightline. There will be free food, live fire and vehicle extrication demonstrations, fire truck displays from KMC FES and surrounding local fire departments, activities for children, door prizes and more.

This year’s Fire Prevention Week will run Oct. 8 through 14.  For more than 90 years, the National Fire Protection Association has sponsored this week across the nation and overseas military installations. Every year they promote education and critical importance and this year’s campaign will be “Every Second Counts, Plan 2 Ways Out!”

Get prepared for a fire by following these simple steps:

Draw a map of your home with all members of your household, marking two exits from each room and a path to the outside from each exit.

Practice your home fire drill at least twice a year. Conduct at least one at night and one during the day with everyone in your home, and practice using different ways out.

Teach children how to escape on their own in case you can’t help them.

Make sure the house number on your home is clearly marked and easy for the fire department to find.

Close doors behind you as you leave – this may slow the spread of smoke, heat, and fire.

Once you get outside, stay outside. Never go back inside a burning building.
