The annual base open house and airshow at Ramstein Air Base “Flugtag” on Aug. 28, 1988, ended in a disaster when a fighter jet from an Italian aerial team crashed after attempting a dangerous maneuver, colliding with other aircraft in the team. The team and falling debris crashed into the crowd, killing 70 and injuring over 400 people.Photo by 86th Airlift Wing History Office
