The 86th Fighter Wing was activated on July 1, 1948, in Neubiberg, which is located about 9 kilometers south of Munich. The wing was established as an air defense mission in post-war Germany against a rising Soviet Union/communism threat to the west.Oil painting by 86 AW History Office
