The U.S. Air Force celebrates its 76th anniversary on Sep. 18 when the National Security Act of 1947 created the Department of Defense and the U.S. Air Force as a separate military service. World War II General Carl A. Spaatz became the first Chief of Staff of the Air Force, and W.
