***image1***For the 30th year, Kaiserslautern’s old part of town called “Altstadt”
turns into a big open air stage July 7 to 9. The Altstadt fest takes
place on Steinstrasse and its side streets. Here and on the fan fest
areas, the grande finale of World Cup 2006 is being celebrated.

Kaiserslautern’s Lord Mayor Bernhard Deubig officially opens the event
at 7 p.m. July 7 on St. Martin’s Square (the beginning of
Steinstrasse).

“The event is a meeting place for friends and with the support of
sponsors we are able to provide a highly qualified program,” said
Alexander Hess, project manager of the office for events in
Kaiserslautern. “We are also happy to have extended hours due to the
World Cup festivities here,” he added.

More than 80 bands and artists perform on eight stages. More than 80
national and international vendors sell their merchandise such as art
and craft items, leather goods, jewelry and clothes in the little side
streets.

***image2***About 40 restaurant and pub owners located in the Altstadt put up
booths and tables and take visitors on a culinary trip throughout the
world. Also, more than 30 local associations present who they are and
what they do.
Walking acts, artists, cheerleaders and the medieval group “Legende” provide entertainment in the streets.

During the first night, several bands perform. Sick’s Pack presents
“Best of Cover” in the yard of Kopp & Krauss, December Peals and
Boozed Tight Pants perform on Unions-platz and the Midnight Mover
present the classics of soul with guest star Worthy Danis on St.
Martin’s Square.

Saturday, activities continue at 11 a.m. Audiopilot plays German rock
‘n’ roll 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Café du Sol presents soul and Latin
music.

A special highlight is the stage show with reggae, socca and more being presented by the band Nawari at 9 p.m.

Stephan Flesch and Band play blues and soul in the evening on Stockhausplatz.

Sunday, the bands The Bossa Boys, Three Monkeys & a Dog and From da
Soul perform again on St. Martins’ Square. The renowned diva Franco
Morgano and band perform Italian music and the Soul Providers present
soul music.

The local dance band the Favorits invite visitors to dance starting at 8 p.m. at Mainzer Tor (the end of Steinstrasse).

“Who is the most beautiful in Kaiserslautern,” is the question again at
3 p.m. on Unionsplatz. The election of “Miss Kaiserslautern” presents
10 ladies in three rounds being judged by experts.

For more information on the program, bands and times, pick up the
brochure in the Kaiserslautern Tourist Information office next to the
Fruchthalle, in local restaurants or at the World Cup fan fest
locations.

A fireworks display under the motto “The great goodbye” closes out the
Altstadt fest and the World Cup festivities at 10:45 p.m. July 9.
According to city officials, about 180,000 visitors are expected to join the Altstadt party.

Several streets will be closed to traffic.
