Kaiserslautern hosts Halloween city parade

The City of Kaiserslautern and the local advertising association “Kaiser in Lautern” will sponsor its third Halloween city parade and pumpkin spectacle Oct. 29. The event, which lured around 10,000 visitors to the city the last two years, will offer a wide variety of activities for children and adults.

From 11 a.m. to midnight, the city will demonstrate it’s Halloween spirit in each corner. There will be costumed people ― witches, magicians, monsters and vampires ― showing off their Halloween spirit. Halloween crafting, pumpkin carving and other kids activities will start at 11 a.m. in the city center. After the fruit and vegetable market on Stiftsplatz closes at 3 p.m., an additional entertainment program for children will begin. There will be an over dimensional bouncy castle that resembles a pirate ship. At 3:30 p.m., the children’s parade will proceed from Stiftsplatz to Marktstrasse, Pirmasenser Strasse and across Altenhof back to Stiftsplatz. After the parade returns, the best fantasy costumes will be awarded.
Also, children will receive prizes for the most creative pumpkins they carved in the pumpkin workshop in front of Stiftskirche.

Marching bands and percussion groups from the local region and neighboring countries will entertain visitors in the streets.

Various food and beverage stands will serve everything from pumpkin cream soup to spooky cocktails.

The highlight of the day will be the Halloween city parade, which begins at 7 p.m. and proceeds from Eisenbahnstrasse, Schneiderstrasse and Fruchthallstrasse to Stiftsplatz.

“Preparations are in full gear. We received a lot of registrations already,” said Alexander Hess, chief of the project office for city events. “We still accept registrations of walking groups and Halloween-decorated vehicles. No matter if they belong to associations, companies, institutions or private groups.”

Anybody interested can watch or walk in the parade wearing Halloween costumes or ride in a special Halloween-decorated vehicle. Registration is required to win prizes. The best decorated vehicle will win €5,000, and the best costume will receive €500.

To register for the parade, visit www.halloween-city-parade.de. Registration fee for vehicles is €50. Interested walking groups with more than 10 people must register for €10.

“Last year, about 30,000 visitors took part in the pumpkin spectacle throughout the day. And at night, about 80,000 spectators watched the parade. We hope it will become a success again this year,” Hess said.

Children wanting to take part in the pumpkin contest or children’s parade, don’t have to register.

After the parade, the Halloween party will continue with special food, drinks and music until midnight around Stiftskirche, at Altenhof and on Schillerplatz.
More information is available in the program flyer, which will be available in the middle of October.
