Making the KMC better for Soldiers and their families is the motivation for the town hall meeting at 6 p.m. Tuesday at the Kaiserslautern Community Activities Center, Bldg. 3109 on Daenner Kaserne.

“We think it’s important to bring the families and Soldiers together and just talk about Kaiserslautern and what we can do to make it better,” said Lt. Col. Mechelle Hale, U.S. Army Garrison Kaiserslautern commander, referring to the senior mission
commander and garrison leadership.

As a combined Army leadership event, this is the second town hall meeting for the KMC. It came about, said Colonel Hale, because the Senior Mission Commander Maj. Gen. Yves Fontaine wanted to be able to talk with families and hear their concerns.

“Initially, we (the garrison) were having the Community Information Forum as sort of our town hall meetings, but we were just touching a small percentage of the population, and by having a town hall meeting after working hours, we make it easier for family members to attend,” said Colonel Hale. Town hall meetings will be held every four months, she added.

Hosted by the garrison’s Family Morale Welfare and Recreation directorate, this town hall meeting follows a format similar to the monthly CIF, said Selinda Torbert, the garrison’s Army Community Service outreach coordinator, who is organizing this event.

Subject matter experts will start the meeting by giving a 10-minute brief on their area. Scheduled topics are on the new driver simulator for high school students here, changes to Soldiers’ education benefits and how survivors’ benefits relate to the Web-based Defense Integrated Military Human Resources System that takes effect for Soldiers March 1.

Briefings should take about 30 to 45 minutes and the floor will be open for questions or to raise other issues.

“They (attendees) will actually be able to address other issues because there will be so many subject matter experts (from KMC agencies and units) attending (the town hall meeting),” said Ms. Torbert.

She lists the Defense Commissary Agency, Defense Logistics Agency, Department of Defense Dependents Schools, Army and Air Force Exchange Service, and new units to the KMC.

“We have a lot of new units coming to Kaiserslautern, and we wanted to make sure that they feel apart of the community and that we address their issues up front,” said Colonel Hale.
