The Kaiserslautern Pikes improved to 7-0 with a 34-17 win at Freiburg June 25.  The win clinched the South Division for Kaiserslautern as well as a playoff berth to determine promotion to second division at season’s end.

The guest got off to a slow start. After stopping the Sacristans on their opening drive, Kaiserslautern threw an interception that went back for a touchdown on their second play and a 7-0 deficit. The Pikes continued to search for offensive consistency throughout the first quarter, while the defense kept Freiburg out of the end zone.

Kaiserslautern got on the board in the second quarter with Eric Walton’s 74-yard touchdown run. Walton finished with a season high of 386 yards on 27 carries and three touchdowns. Freiburg struck back with a touchdown pass to push its lead to 14-7, however the Pikes answered the next possession with a 17 yard touchdown run by quarterback Denis Rohleder, but the Pikes missed the extra point leaving the score at 14-13. The Sacristans finished the half by tacking on a field goal and took a 17-13 lead going into the half. The second half was all Kaiserslautern as the defense held Freiburg to 42 total yards of offense and -4 yards rushing. The Pikes used their dominating rushing game to control the half.

Walton added two more scores while Rohleder finished off the scoring in the fourth quarter with his second rushing touchdown. Overall, Kaiserslautern finished with 469 yards of total offense that included 429 yards rushing. The defense was led by linebacker Kamil Mazur and defensive end Brian Watkins. Watkins sacked with a force fumble while having three tackles for loss, as Mazur collected two more sacks.

The Pikes are off until July 17 when they will travel to Mainz to take on the Golden Eagles. They will then finish up the season with back-to-back home games versus Montabauer and Frankfurt.
