Keeping children healthy

Immunization update:
Although no American cases have been reported in the U.S. beneficiary
population, American military parents in Europe should make sure their
children’s measles vaccinations are up to date.

There has been a recent spike in the number of German children who have
contracted the disease. More than 1,000 cases have been reported in the
Nordrhein-Westfalen state. This is just north of the Rheinland-Pfalz
state which includes the American communities in Kaiserslautern and
Wiesbaden.
Ramstein Clinic Public Health Officer Maj. James Stigers said that the
vast majority of KMC school-age children are current and screened for
required MMR vaccine, which prevents measles, at 12-month well-baby
checks and prior to school admission.

Though clinic staff and school nurses work diligently to assist this
prevention effort, parents’ attention to the child’s shots at 12 months
and at 4 and 5 years old is key to ensure young people remain
protected.

Bridget Gregory at 479-2234/2246.

School/sports physicals:
Annual health screening physicals are normally required for students
who wish to participate in school, sports, and camp programs.
Continuing the efforts to provide more options to meet beneficiaries’
healthcare needs, the 435th Medical Group’s Pediatric and Family
Practice clinics are offering parents an alternative when scheduling
youth school, sports and camp physicals.
Physicals are now available by appointment at various times throughout
the week for Ramstein Clinic prime enrollees and KMC area pay
patients.  These appointments are for school-age school, sports
and camp physicals only and will not address other health care issues.

To book a child’s physical appointment, call CARE-Line at
479-2273.  Please note, if a child has had a physical completed
within the past 12 months, they are considered current and parents can
contact the clinic where the child is enrolled to obtain a copy for
school, sports and camp purposes.
