***image1***Kaiserslautern holds its traditional “Maikerwe” (May carnival) today through June 6 on the Messeplatz fairgrounds.

Deputy Mayor Dr. Arne Oeckinghaus officially opens the event by tapping the first keg of beer at 6 p.m. today in the bistro tent. A regional brewery will pass out free beer to visitors. Non-alcoholic beverages are free. As soon as it gets dark, fireworks are lit.

The carnival offers a variety of rides and food specialties. Carnival goers who are looking for some excitement should test “Space Roller,” a ride with loopings. The chance to turn, swing and fly is given on “Shake,” “Drive” and “Music Express.” “Wildwater” is a refreshing ride on sunny days. “Superslide” offers a 54-meter long ride for the whole family. Children can enjoy pony riding and special kids’ rides. “Pirates Adventures” takes children into a pirates’ world with many challenges.

Hungry visitors can take a break in beer gardens or one of the many tents to taste crispy chicken, ham hocks, crepes, pizza and fish specialties. Palatinate and international culinary specialties are also available at the food booths.

Vendors having their booths and stands set up in the “shopping street,” which is 1.7 kilometers long, offer a variety of merchandise to include clothes, household items, leather goods, jewelry and spices.

Wednesday is family day with reduced prices and special offers until 7 p.m.
The carnival closes out with a “Thank you” fireworks display June 6.
The rides are open 2 p.m. to midnight each day, and until 1 a.m. Saturdays. Some food booths and vendors open at 11 a.m.
