New KMC commander says ‘Thank you’

Col. Richard Johnston
86th Airlift Wing/KMC commander

To the Ramstein and Kaiserslautern Military Community family: it is an extraordinary privilege for Terry and me to join you here in Germany. We are grateful for this incredible opportunity and truly look forward to meeting many of you. You have proven time and again that you are the “make it happen, get it done” team.

To our host nation friends, thank you so much for opening your community up to Terry and me. We look forward to getting to know you better. The outstanding cooperation and reliable support the U.S. military has enjoyed for so many decades make us eager to experience them firsthand. You have greatly contributed to the unique history of the 86th Airlift Wing and the Kaiserslautern Military Community – as valuable employees, dependable partners and gracious hosts.

Terry and I would like to expressly thank those involved in organizing and participating in the change of command, and for making our arrival so pleasant. The ceremony was very special and we will have fond memories of every detail.

The 86th Airlift Wing and Kaiserslautern Military Community are each unique – a premier airlift wing charged with a critical mobility mission at a time when the nation is at war and responding to humanitarian operations throughout the globe. The nation’s responsibilities are not shrinking and global mobility’s role is continuing to grow. The KMC represents the largest concentration of American military personnel outside the United States and taking care of families is a prime means of helping to get the mission done.
I also recognize the incredible diversity that Ramstein has with a headquarters function and many tenant organizations with proud heritages of service and who are incredibly important to mission success.

Together, we have to perform superbly when called upon, no matter what duties or responsibilities we may have. Everyone is vital to the success of each mission whether in the air or on the ground – everyone is important. You should not measure your worth by your proximity to the target. Together we will serve our leadership with courage, precision and reliability.

As we continue to fulfill the high expectations others have for us, let’s approach our responsibilities with enthusiasm, professionalism and an abiding respect for one another and our host nation, joint and combined teammates. I believe you are eager to do the very best job you can and the mission depends upon it.

My promise is that I will lead from the front; I will work hard every day and strive to maintain the same high standards as each of you; and along the way, we will have fun too.

Again, Terry and I are honored to become a part of your family and we look forward to meeting you.
