A Vogelweh Teen Center member was recently named the 2015 European Military Youth of the Year.

RianSimone Harris, daughter of Master Sgt. Shaun and Tatineesha Harris, won the title after competing in Wiesbaden, Germany against representatives from U.S. Army Europe and U.S. Naval Forces Europe representatives.

The Boys and Girls Club of America established the Youth of the Year program in 1947 to enable young people’s character, personal growth and leadership qualities to be fostered in a variety of teen club programming.

“I’m so excited,” said Sergeant Harris, 435th Security Forces Squadron first sergeant. “For me as a military member, you look at how successful you have been in your career. My biggest success is my kids. The fact that she won makes me feel proud because I know how hard she works.”

As a senior at Kaiserslautern High School, RianSimone maintained a 4.1 GPA. She also served as the vice president of the student body as well as the president of the National Honor Society and the Vogelweh Teen Center Keystone Club, which is an affiliate of the Boys and Girls Club of America.

RianSimone also plays the guitar, has leading roles in her school’s theatrical productions and  KMC Onstage productions, and is a member of the track and field, and cross-country teams.

Along with the recognition, RianSimone also received a $5,000 scholarship, which may come in handy as she plans to study sociology and criminology at Point Loma Nazarene University in San Diego, Calif.

She will move on to compete for the 2015 Overseas Region Military Youth of the Year award in Tokyo, Japan, this June.
