Summer safety: lightning

Story courtesy 86th Airlift Wing safety office

Lightning is the leading cause of reportable weather-related aircraft accidents in the Air Force and consistently among the top four weather-related killers.
Lightning strikes are possible up to 20 miles from a thunderstorm (avoid the down-wind area of clouds).

The National Weather Service reports more than 3,000 deaths a year from cardiac arrest related to lightning strikes.

Seek shelter in enclosed building or vehicle. Golf carts, solitary trees and picnic shelters do not constitute suitable shelter. If you cannot find shelter, crouch down in a catcher’s stance.  Put your hands on your knees or place them over your ears to protect against hearing damage from thunder.

While with others, stay 15 feet apart. Remember, if you see it (lightning), flee it (take shelter).  If you can hear it (thunder), clear it (stop your activities).
