Friday, Feb. 10, was a cold, dreary day on Ramstein. A blanket of dark clouds eclipsed the sun and sky, shutting out the light and dappling the landscape with delicate snow. Anybody would have wanted to stay inside and succumb to the stillness of a grave winter morning.

Clear skies and a cold breeze added to the atmosphere of the moment while two crews assigned to the 37th Airlift Squadron at Ramstein assisted their passengers’ mission for the day: jumping out of a perfectly good C-130J Super Hercules.

Airman 1st Class Patrick Stone, 37th Airlift Squadron loadmaster, poses in front of a C-130J Super Hercules Nov. 17 on Ramstein. Stone, along with wingman Staff Sgt. James Gaston, 37 AS loadmaster, worked together to create a new repair program within their unit, which salvages usable parts from nonfunctional headsets to create complete units. In the first iteration of their program, Gaston and Stone were able to assemble nine fully functional headsets from individual components, thus reducing the number of new headsets needing to be purchased. Together, they saved the Air Force $8,100.

RIGA, Latvia — The hum of propellers fills the airfield as the outside world is still silent and waking. It is 4 a.m. and sunny with clouds scattered across the Baltic sky. Twelve Airmen work diligently, reviewing checklists and running inspections, as fuel is pumped into two C-130J Super Hercules aircraft before another busy day.
