The wine season is soon to end and the grape harvest is in full gear. This is when the wine growing community of Freinsheim sponsors its annual culinary wine hike. The hike will be held today to Sunday.

The event will offer its visitors a delightful 7-km hike through “wine and kitchen” in the middle of an idyllic wine growing area.

The hiking trail is located southwest of Freinsheim and leads through two vineyards called “Oschelskopf” and “Schwarzes Kreuz,” or “Black Cross.” An ornamented pillar made of sandstone from the 16th century, which shows the crucifixion scene, gave the wine hiking trail its name.

The event will start at 6 p.m. today by opening 20 drinking and eating stands along the route. Hikers can taste wines, sparkling wines and juices made by local vintners. International and regional culinary specialties such as goulash soup, meat dumplings with horse radish, vintner’s ham and steaks, Palatinate tapas, pumpkin cream soup, bratwurst, potato pancakes with salmon, coconut milk soup with cilantro and lemongrass, Thai curry, marinated giant scampi with spaghetti salad, oriental lamb pot, salad plates with cheese and French white bread, fresh oysters, onion cake, dampfnudeln with vanilla or wine sauce, waffles and a lot more will be offered.

After dark today, a fireworks display will illuminate the vineyards.

Saturday, Wine Princess Anne II will officially open the event at 11:30 a.m. at the historical town hall.

The wine stands will be open from 6 to 10 p.m. today and 11:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Local stores will open for Sunday shopping from 1 to 6 p.m.

The old part of town will be closed to motorized traffic. Visitors coming by car are asked to park outside of town. The center is only a few steps away.

From the historical town hall, hikers should walk on Hauptstrasse, turn onto Breite Strasse and pass the Hain Gate after 50 meters. Then they need to turn left onto Friedhofstrasse and then straight again to reach stand No. 1.

If starting from the train station, hikers need to follow the arrows on Franz-Lind-Strasse, turn right to the gatekeeper house, then right again to get to stand No. 1 after 50 meters.

To get to Freinsheim, travel on A6 direction Mannheim, take the Gruenstadt exit, and follow the signs to Kirchheim, Dackenheim and Freinsheim.
