Wings win Air Force awards

86th AW earns award


The 86th Airlift Wing recently distinguished itself by exceptionally
meritorious service with Valor from Jan. 15, 2004 to Oct. 31, 2005.
 

During this period, they led European Command’s theater airlift force
in fighting and sustaining the Global War on Terrorism.  The 86th
AW responded, flying over 14,000 sorties, delivering 43,521 passengers
and 36,000 tons of cargo, supporting 7 major operations and 15
deployments in 30 countries.  

The 86th AW continued its commitment to peace in the Balkans, flying
465 combat sorties supporting Operations Joint Forge and Joint
Guardian. 
Additionally, the wing conducted Operations African Movement in Sudan,
with 10 total deployed aircraft moving 1,821 Rwandan peacekeeping
forces and 150,000 pounds of equipment to stabilize the strife-torn
Darfur region.  

While supporting Central Command with a steady state deployment, the
wing flew over 3,000  combat sorties, delivering 29,744
warfighters and 4,868 tons of cargo to the frontline, while also
treating over 1,300 combat wounded at contingency aeromedical staging
facilities in support of Operations Enduring and Iraqi Freedom.

435th ABW takes honors

The 435th Air Base Wing recently distinguished itself by exceptionally
meritorious service from Jan. 14, 2004 to Oct. 31, 2005. 

During this period, the wing accomplished its mission with a maximum
degree of war readiness and directly contributed to the fulfillment of
national objectives.  The wing delivered unparalleled wartime
support, providing logistical readiness, engineering prowess, robust
communications, up-to-the-minute media coverage, and numerous other
functions supporting Operations Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom.

As the “Gateway to Peace,” the wing spearheaded United States Air
Forces in Europe’s Hurricane Katrina and Sudan humanitarian relief
efforts supplying aid and relief to 10 of thousands. 

The wing is directly responsible for executing over $1.2 billion in
Ramstein Air Base construction projects, the largest such undertaking
outside the war zone.  The outstanding improvements in base
appearance masterminded by the wing garnered Ramstein Air Base first
place in the 2005 United States Air Forces in Europe Base Appearance
Competition, Large Base Category, winning an immediate $20,000 for base

38th CSW recognized

The 38th Combat Support Wing recently distinguished itself by
exceptionally meritorious service from May 25, 2004 to Oct. 31,
2005. 

During this period, the wing effectively organized, trained, equipped,
and maintained combat-ready forces for rapid deployment while ensuring
forces were ready to meet the challenges of peacetime air sovereignty
and wartime air defense in support of the Global War on
Terrorism. 

The wing effectively faced many challenges as it stood up in May 2004
but still was able to deliver timely combat support and flawless
oversight to three air base groups, one munitions maintenance group,
one combat support center, and one construction and training squadron,
managing $2 billion in infrastructure assets and support to 2,400
military and civilian personnel in 9 countries. 

This unique wing proudly joined with NATO allies to build peace and
prosperity throughout the region and beyond, performing postal
operations, munitions maintenance, military and civilian personnel
support, medical care, contracting, civil engineering support,
security, law enforcement support, and expeditionary combat support
