Sept. 15 at the Grafenwoehr Training Area. About 22 candidates participated in the intense, annual weeklong competition, the most prestigious competitive event of the region. In the end, only one junior officer, one NCO and one Soldier emerged as “Best Warriors.”

Wine village opens in Neustadt
The annual wine harvest fest in Neustadt/German Wine Street starts today with the opening of the wine village consisting of little framework houses across from the train station. Visitors can taste new wine and Palatinate food specialties including onion cake, liver dumplings and saumagen. The wine harvest fest with a carnival takes place Oct. 2 to Oct. 12. The big vintner's parade is scheduled for 2 p.m. Oct. 11. For more information, visit www.neustadt.eu.

The fifth North Palatinate Farmers Market will take place from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday in Schneckenhausen. Regional farmers and vendors will present high-quality items at about 50 stands. The event will also feature a tractor display and thresher demonstration.

Officials of the Westpfalz Police Headquarters ask motorists to obey the new traffic route near the mall in downtown Kaiserslautern. During a recent four-hour check by German Polizei, 81 motorists were fined €20 each. Coming from Koenigstrasse, the correct route turns left and not straight.
