AADD a safe, but last resort

Armed Forces Against Drunk Driving has saved more than 1,900 lives in 2008 and more than 11,500 lives since the program came to the KMC in 2003.

The primary role of AADD is to prevent accidents and deaths related to drinking and driving and to educate everyone against the dangers of such actions. The program has proved to be an important asset to saving the lives of families, friends, civilians and military members.

AADD’s success could not be accomplished without support from the KMC joint forces – Soldiers, Airmen, Sailors, Department of Defense civilians and dependents. Every week they devote not only their free time on Friday and Saturday nights, but they also sacrifice personal expenses for fuel.

AADD would like to remind everyone during the holidays that even though we are being promoted by squadrons, supervisors and first sergeants, this program is not intended as a first resort. You should always establish a game plan before heading out for the night.

Here are some guidelines:
• Appoint a designated driver and stick to the plan
• Hide emergency cash in your pocket or sock for a cab if your primary               plan fails
• Call a sober friend, supervisor, first sergeant or commander for a ride
• Or just don’t drink, and be a good wingman

If all else fails, call AADD. One drink is all it takes to get a DUI. Remember, it’s your career.
When AADD receives a call, we ask the caller for their first name and for a contact number in case we need to reach them.
AADD will send out a team of two. The first volunteer will drive the
caller’s vehicle, accompanied by the caller. The second volunteer will follow the first car to ensure a smooth arrival at the caller’s destination as well as taking the fellow volunteer back to the office.

Without the continued support of volunteers, AADD will not survive. We are asking for your help from 11 p.m. until 5 a.m. Fridays and Saturdays. Volunteers are not required to work the full six-hour shift and can show up whenever they like. During the downtime and in between calls there are movies, video games, wireless Internet and free food available.

Our new headquarters is located upstairs in the Ramstein Enlisted Club, near the southside fitness center. For details or to volunteer, talk to your squadron point of contact or e-mail kmc.aadd@ramstein.af.mil.
