Germans observe New Year’s traditions
People throughout the world observe New Year
For the second year the German-American Community Office invited Americans to perform at the Christmas market in Kaiserslautern.
Each year numerous accidents occur as a result of snow and ice conditions. According to officials of public order offices, in some cases these accidents could have been prevented if all home and property owners and tenants had carried out their responsibilities regarding the correct and timely removal of snow and ice.
All over German Christmas markets, shoppers will find unique wooden items such as nutcrackers, Christmas pyramids, angels and other figures. The origin of these holiday items goes back to the 17th century in the Erzgebirge, a mountain area near the Czech border.
The Christmas market in Kaiserslautern will present a live nativity scene 5 p.m. Monday on Schillerplatz. A horse farm will show how animals celebrate Christmas. The Goldway Pipers will play music before the Kaiserslautern Zoo will open its petting zoo from 5 to 7 p.m. The school orchestra of the Kurpfalz Realschule will perform 6 to 8 p.m.
Santa performs
High wire acrobat Falko Traber, dressed as Santa Claus, will present a Christmas high wire show at 3 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. Thursday and Dec. 15 at the Christmas market in Kaiserslautern. Children can sing him a Christmas song and will receive gifts in return.

The traditional Culture Market before Christmas is being held at the Fruchthalle in Kaiserslautern from 1 to 9 p.m. each day through Dec. 11. The Christmas market in Otterberg takes place Saturday, Dec. 10 and 17. The market set up in front of the Abbey Church opens at 4 p.m. and features various music bands on stage.
